The Investigations Division of the Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for determining the origin and cause of all fires in the city of Virginia Beach. The most common determined causes are deemed accidental, natural, or incendiary.

Fire investigations also investigate threats to burn or bomb, fire fatalities, serious fire-related injuries, and all incidents involving explosive devices including fireworks.

Fire investigators, also known as Fire Marshals, have full police powers and routinely conduct criminal investigations in the course of their duties. There are five full time investigators with one supervisor assigned to the Fire Prevention Bureau.

Unlike inspectors, they are not assigned to specific areas within the city. Investigators may partner with other local departments and Federal agencies to maximize resources when faced with large-scale incidents and multi-jurisdictional cases.

Contact the FPB office at (757) 385-4228 to report any questionable fire activity. In an emergency, dial 9-1-1 for immediate assistance. Please contact the Crime Line to report leads to previous or current criminal activities at 1-888-Lock-U-Up (1-888-562-5887).
